About
We conceived of the Oliveto Wine Journal in hopes of shifting the point of view away from the wine consumer/wine critic and towards the person who understands wine on a more intimate level, the wine maker.
We are interested in a larger conversation predicated on the belief that the “art of wine-making” is an extension of the relationship between the people and the place where it is created.
By place, we mean terroir, but also a wine’s place within a lineage, the evolution of wine-making practices within that lineage, the personalities, the communities, and the myriad relationships that exist between food, family, and tradition that ultimately bring a wine to life.
• We aim to consider wine in context. In the context of the global market and in the context of a tradition.
• We are not interested in trends. Innovations yes.
• We are interested in the language wine makers use to describe wines.
• We aim to convey a true sense of place. We believe wine lives where it is grown. Through videos & interviews we hope to create a multi-layered profile of the wines we admire & the wine makers who make them.
We search out wines from small family and artisan producers that offer us the chance to develop an ongoing relationship over time. Typicity, authenticity, and honest, traditional methods are key factors in the wines we typically find interesting. Balance, elegance, and the ability to age gracefully are defining characteristics that guide each selection for our list.
